LED Lights in Outdoor Design: Tips from Urban Landscape Pioneer Garett McCorkle

Urban Landscape is one of Southern California’s most in-demand outdoor design firms, operating in Orange County and beyond for over 25 years. Owner and president Garett McCorkle is so passionate about landscape design that he also launched Urban Landscape Magazine with the hopes that his publication would “tell the story of how to build outdoor environments, why they’re important and how everyone can enjoy them.”

Browsing through Urban Landscape’s gallery of projects is impressive—the company has created new designs and remodels for every type of outdoor environment, including pools, waterfalls, patios, outdoor kitchens, gardens and even living walls. But even more inspiring is McCorkle’s commitment to continually evolve and grow along with his industry. One key element of his approach is to stay educated about the most recent advances in outdoor design; doing so ensures Urban Landscape is always using the most cutting edge tools and products for the job. I spoke with McCorkle about one specific type of product he uses in almost every environment he creates: LED lights.

McCorkle began using LED lights a few years ago: “we started hearing about how they were the best for outdoor applications: there’s so much custom stuff you can do with them, and the lighting is so dynamic, efficient and long-lasting,” he says. ”We use them everywhere from up lighting trees to water features. They’re great for all types of designs, from rustic, small spaces to more grandiose, vast backyards.” For instance, McCorkle designed the stunning custom water feature pictured above using waterproof LED strip lights.

Talking to McCorkle, it’s clear that passion for outdoor design goes hand-in-hand with passion for lighting. McCorkle believes lighting is one of the most important parts of creating an inviting space. “We believe laying the groundwork for seamless functioning of stylish lighting is crucial for creating a stunning design and the most important result: a happy client,” he says.

In a recent design of a private residence in Laguna Niguel, McCorkle and his team created a beautiful, craftsman-inspired outdoor room and remodeled the pool, incorporating Carrara Marble, recessed LED lighting and waterproof flexible LED strip lights.

This outdoor room employs recessed LED lighting in the ceiling that’s similar to Elemental LED’s super bright LED module light.

Above all, McCorkle recommends blending “the structural and natural: Like the final step in any creative process, the addition of the natural elements to the structural, is what truly makes your outdoor space breathtaking.”

Interior Designer Jamie Beckwith Discusses Her Stunning LED Wine Cellar

Jamie Beckwith is known for her innovative contributions to interior design, specifically in the realm of wood surfaces. But recently, she brought her pioneering reputation underground by creating an eye-popping LED wine cellar that has the design world buzzing.

Described by some as a “TRON cathedral,” the cellar has several special features: acrylic wine racks, color changing LED lights and a transparent ceiling, to name a few. I recently tracked down Beckwith to get a little insight into how and why she designed this masterpiece.

“I was inspired by many of the commercial wine cellars I have seen at restaurants around the world, specifically Las Vegas.  I wanted to combine a rustic element with a modern form and lighting was especially important in the design,” says Beckwith about why she chose such a striking, modern and high tech design scheme for this wine cellar, which resides in the basement of a Franklin, Tennessee home.

Turns out LED lights were the only lighting option for the job.  “I chose the LED lights for the ease of installation, the ability to change the color of the light and for the safety of the wine,” she says. “There is over $700,000-worth of rare and vintage wines in this cellar and while the space is unique and attractive, it had to function first. This means that the lighting does indeed stay cool without giving off heat and condensation is not good for the wine and would also cloud the acrylic that housed the wine.  This cellar is outfitted with humidity control and temperature control,” she adds.

Another common problem many wine collectors face is damage caused by exposure to UV radiation, which fluorescent lights emit. This provided an additional incentive for Beckwith to choose LED lights, since they do not emit UV rays. She explains that UV radiation from other sources, i.e.: from other lighting types or from the room above, is dealt with easily. “The UV lights are only turned on when there is a party or get together.  They could easily be turned off and while the ceiling in the cellar is made from glass, there are 3 large black out shades that keep all light out from above,” she says.

All in all, the wine cellar has achieved what Beckwith believes is interior design’s number one goal: “to provoke strong emotional response.” To that end, she’s not afraid to employ LED lights in other bold designs, including the two lighting features pictured below, one a stair tower fixture and the other an illumined panels. “I use LED lights for the ease of installation, the small amount of energy they use and how long their life is,” says Beckwith, but also because they’re highly “decorative and give strong ambiance to a space.” We couldn’t agree more.

Alex Phelps: How and Why to Use LED Lights in Your Aquarium

Whether you’re in a fancy restaurant or the dentist office, there’s no denying that aquariums bring a certain amount of serene beauty to a space. For this reason, and because installing and maintaining aquariums has become more affordable, the DIY aquarium movement is on the rise. And with so many custom design options available, it’s easy to see why hobbyists and professionals alike often refer to aquatic environments as “living art.”

Alexander Phelps is a Los Angeles-based aquaria specialist. He is a former product specialist for Aquatop and is currently starting his own custom aquatic consultation firm, Bio-Topic. He believes that among many important factors, like filtration, symbiotic habitats and nutrients, lighting is a key component for both a healthy and beautiful aquarium.

“Lighting is important for one of two reasons, based on the application. Either you are trying to dramatically illuminate your aquarium for decorative effect, or you are using lighting to support photosynthetic life, AKA plants and coral,” says Phelps.

For both applications, Phelps believes LED lights to be the far superior choice above any other lighting type. Read on to find out Phelps’ useful tips for both decorative and photosynthetic aquatic lighting. (Keep in mind all lighting applications for aquariums should take place outside of the water, above or next to the tank, and should be water resistant due to condensation that can occur on the lights.)

Decorative Lighting

Don’t Overspend

“You don’t need to spend a lot of money on decorative lighting, since you’re not looking for LEDs that will support life. Use lower wattage fixtures like strip lights, and make sure they’re water resistant,” says Phelps.

Get Colorful
“Color-changing LED lights are very popular in aquatic environments these days. Most people are using LED lighting to change the mood setting, with a whiter color during the daytime and a moonlight effect at nighttime, achieved using purple and blue lights. You can use RGB LEDs to create any type of under water scenery,” says Phelps. A moonlight effect can be seen in the image above, which depicts a tank designed by Phelps.

Dim the Lights
“Use dimmable LEDs so you don’t blind your fish! A good rule of thumb is that if it’s too bright for you to look at, it’ll be too bright for your fish,” says Phelps.

Daylight Shimmer
Another huge decorative benefit of using LED lights is that they create what aquarium specialists call “daylight shimmer,” or a beautiful ripple effect in the water. “Daylight shimmer is created by point source lighting, which means lots of light from a single, focused source. Halogen lights also create daylight shimmer, but they use a ton of energy and also put out a lot of heat, which can affect the health of your aquarium. The other alternative, fluorescent lights, doesn’t create daylight shimmer because it isn’t a form of point source lighting,” says Phelps.

Photosynthetic Support

UV Lights
“If you’re looking for lights that will help support the life of living plants and coral, you want to choose LEDs that offer ‘usable light,’” says Phelps. According to Phelps, usable light does not refer to visible light or brightness, but instead to light in the blue or UV range of the spectrum, which is what all plant life uses to create chlorophyll A and B, the food that allows them to live and grow. The most popular LEDs for this application are “3 watt LEDs that offer a PAR (Photosynthetically active radiation) between 400 to 700 nanometers. PAR is the amount of usable light put out by a single source,” says Phelps. Try LightsWorldLED’s flexible ultraviolet LED strip light

Reduced Heat and Electricity Costs
The traditional lighting system for aquariums used to be metal halogen lights, which used tons of energy and also emitted so much heat that the aquarium required a whole separate refrigeration system. “There is so much heat transference to the water with halogen lights that you have to install a chiller to constantly run cold water back into the tank. The electricity costs are really high. With LED lights, you’re eliminating not only the energy costs of the lights, but also of the chiller,” says Phelps. “It’s important for any ecosystem to maintain a stable temperature—if not, certain organisms could die, or you could get overrun with algae.”

Healthier Ecosystems and Reduced Replacement Costs
When light is supporting life in your tank, it’s important to make sure that light maintains a consistent spectral output. “Many bulbs are hand selected for specific spectrums, but the problem with halogen or fluorescent bulbs is that over the life of the bulb, their light spectrum shifts. If over time you see a decline in the spectral output of the bulb, you’re going to see a decline in the growth of your ecosystem,” says Phelps.

“Either you’re having to replace your bulbs every 9 months, which is expensive, or you wait too long and risk shocking your photosynthetic life by changing the light spectrum too drastically when you do replace it,” says Phelps. LEDs, on the other hand, have a life span of 50,000-80,000 hours, and remain much more consistent in their spectral output throughout their lifespan. “You only have to replace them every five years or so,” adds Phelps.

“Aquariums are so cool because you get to create your own little world,” says Phelps. But with great power comes great responsibility, as the saying goes. And it looks like the most responsible aquarium owners are using LED lights for every application.

Three LED DIY Projects in Honor of Spring

Spring is here and whether you’re into DIY projects big or small, there’s no better time to get started on something than during this season of newness and growth.

Nothing says spring to me more than flowers, and so first I’ll share a large, inspiring public project: a stunning LED light display put together by BWArchitects for the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival.

Not only is the front of the New York City courthouse lit up in color changing LED wall washers, but 1600 LED flowers, made by attaching individual diodes to different lengths of flexible metal wire, are planted on the steps leading up to it. The LED lights are wrapped in thin, translucent paper, and wave in the wind like a real meadow full of blooms.

But even if your house doesn’t have a staircase or foyer as large as the New York City courthouse, you can still create a great spring-themed project to light up you home.

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Turn a cactus or succulent into an outdoor lighting fixture by draping it in flexible waterproof LED strip light and plugging it into a nearby outlet. This particular image is actually a paper mache cactus sculpture lit up in LED string lights, the instructions for which you can get here. But I don’t see why you couldn’t just add lights to an existing cactus if you had one.

If you know how to crochet, why not do so around a length of indoor flexible LED strip light? The rug could be as big or small as you like and plug into the nearest outlet! You could even use it camping if the wattage was low enough and you brought along a battery. What a fun idea! And if you don’t know how to crochet, it’s never too late to learn.

And instead of spending lots of money on illuminated planters, you can highlight your spring garden outside by wrapping the bases of your pots and planters in flexible waterproof LED strip lights. The adhesive backing will affix to nearly any surface, and you can plug them in to the nearest outlet using an LED light bar cable adapter and a 12V DC plug in adapter.

What other spring DIY LED projects can you think of? We’d love to hear about them!

Low Voltage Lighting: A New List of Benefits

The gap in pricing between low voltage lighting and more traditional high voltage lighting continues to close, while the list of benefits for utilizing low voltage lighting continues to grow. Most consumers are familiar with the well-known energy efficiency benefits of LED lights, but many still wonder, when is the right time to make the switch to LEDs? The product experts here at Elemental LED have put together a list of the lesser known, but very significant, benefits of low voltage lighting. Here is an updated list of benefits that demonstrates why LED technology has now emerged as the clear choice for any lighting installation:

LONGEVITY

With recent advancements in low voltage lighting technology, 24 volt and 12 volt lighting have reached new milestones when it comes to expected lifespan. Quality LED lighting products from top vendors now have a projected lifespan up to 50,000 hours. For example, if the lights are used 8 hours a day, that equates to over 17 years of illumination! After 50,000 hours, LEDs will typically start to decrease in brightness capability in a very steady and subtle manner, which allows for use well after the official 50,000-hour projection. In comparison, fluorescent lighting will reach the end of its projected lifespan far more quickly and abruptly. Fluorescents and other traditional light sources need to be replaced far more often than LED lighting. Customers demand a quality, low-maintenance light source, and 24 volt and 12 volt LED lights provide an easy, long-lasting solution.

FLEXIBILITY TO FIT ANYWHERE

24 volt and 12 volt lighting products such as dimmable LED strip light allow for endless installation possibilities. LED strip light (also known as tape light) is extremely low profile and cuttable to fit just about anywhere. The low profile form of LED strip light makes it the perfect lighting solution for areas where traditional lighting could never before fit. LED lighting has quickly become the ideal choice for under cabinet lighting, cove lighting, toe kick lighting, and shelf lighting. Other types of dimmable low profile 12 volt LED lights include LED light bars and LED puck lights. The streamlined form of low voltage lighting results in a seamless, modern finish. Users enjoy a high quality light and superior brightness with minimal heat output in a low profile product.

SUPERIOR BRIGHTNESS CAPABILITY

With recent advancements in low voltage lighting, certain linear LED light fixtures now offer greater brightness capability than fluorescent light sources of equal length. The compact form of 24 volt and 12 volt lighting allows the installer to create powerful parallel runs of low profile LED lighting, providing exceptional brightness across the full length of a linear space. 24 volt and 12 volt LED lights have become the dominant lighting choice as LED brightness capabilities and color options have increased, and energy-efficiency is now just a bonus to the superior light quality that LEDs now offer.

MORE COLOR OPTIONS

Low voltage lighting is available in far more color options than its fluorescent counterpart. 24 volt and 12 volt LED lights are now available in a wide array of white light color temperatures, including different shades of warm white, neutral white, and cool white. Elemental LED even offers specialized services to manufacture lighting with a customized color temperature to meet very specific customer requirements. 24 volt and 12 volt lighting is also available in various color options such as red, green, or blue, and color-changing. With color-changing RGB technology, pre-programmed or programmable color controllers are used to switch between different single color modes or color-changing effects.

OUTSTANDING LIGHTING UNIFORMITY

Low voltage lighting offers consistent and uniform light production that is especially important in linear lighting installations. The uniform output of linear LED lighting offers a consistent, ambient light fill for any space along the entire length of an installation. From diode to diode, LEDs produce a consistent beam angle. LED industry leaders offer quality products with characteristics such as consistency in beam angle, color temperature, and light output that fluorescents can’t match.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

We’ll conclude with the originally known benefit of low voltage lighting: energy-efficiency. Low voltage lighting consumes 80% less energy than CFLs and incandescent bulbs. The cost savings associated with the low energy consumption of 24 volt and 12 volt LED lights is just one of many great benefits to utilizing low voltage lighting technology. With recent advancements in LED technology, LEDs now lead the lighting industry in the categories of longevity, brightness, uniformity, and color options. When aspects of energy-efficiency and wide-ranging installation possibilities are factored in to the equation, LED lighting has emerged as a clear choice for lighting installations of all kinds.

LED Christmas Lights Guide

The Holiday season is in full swing, and so is the search for quality LED
Christmas string lights. LED lights offer many advantages to traditional
“bulb strings”. They are far more durable, longer lasting, more energy
efficient, and safer. Quality is important, so how do you choose the best
one? Elemental LED is here to help you make the best decision.

Flickering

Quality components have always been the foundation of beautiful and
durable Christmas Lighting, and LED lighting is no different. When looking
at your carefully decorated home or tree, the last thing you want is a low
frequency flicker to disrupt the holiday mood. Lower quality LED lighting
may exhibit subtle and distracting flickering, which comes from absent
or low quality rectifiers. The result is a 60Hz flicker in which the LEDs are
actually off for half of the AC cycle.
Elemental LED delivers consistent and non-flickering lighting with our string
light, thanks to high quality rectifiers incorporated into each string. The
rectified current is converted to DC (from AC) and helps deliver a brighter,
consistent light output.

Illumination

Brightness is key to any holiday lighting whether interior or exterior.
Elemental LED holiday lighting strings deliver bright and consistent light that
can be daisy chained up to thirty-six (36) sets, giving you up to 1,206 feet
of gloriously bright lighting in a single run.

As you plan out your holiday decor this season, check out our easy to
use LED lighting to put the final touches to your holiday cheer! We have
